AILENE: Special abilities

Dear friend,

Did you know some of us have special abilities? Pretty cool, right? Not everyone on my planet has them, and it’s actually more of an anomaly than a standard. Still, I know quite a few people who possess one (or more).

Lowell’s ability is echolocation, which means he can determine the location of objects or people by using reflected sound. He simply clicks his tongue, and only a few moments later, several images of his surroundings are revealed to him. Suri can stop time. When she uses her ability, everything around her freezes, except for herself and whoever she invites inside her time bubble.

To make sure I don’t spoil too much, I won’t name the other people with abilities I know, but I will tell you what they can do. One can read minds and transfer feelings, while another can remove scars. I also know someone who can heal people (the coolest ability I’ve encountered so far!) and I once met someone who can control air. And a friend of mine told me she once saw a man who could spontaneously make fire erupt from his hands. Wow!

I don’t believe I’ve met anyone else with special abilities, though I can’t be sure. Some people who have them keep it a secret, and I understand why. Being “different” is often a good thing, but not everyone sees it that way. I hope you don’t understand what I am talking about, but I’m afraid this is too real for too many people (and I’m not just talking about special abilities, but about not fitting into the norm in general). Jax will probably tell you more about this in his posts, so I will tell you about my own ability instead.

Just to make sure you don’t start hating me for spoiling too much, I have to warn you that by telling you about my ability, I might give away a few things. It’s not a big spoiler, but if you don’t want to know, skip to the next paragraph. At the start of AILENE, I think my ability is controlling air. It’s what I’ve been able to do for many years, and I have no clue it’s only part of my true ability. Later on, I find out my real ability is empathy (there is no official name for it, since I might be the only one who has it), which means I absorb other people’s feelings and abilities. This also means all the abilities I have mentioned before (except for the fire one, because I’ve never met that man in person), I now have too. It’s crazy to even think about, but it’s honestly both a blessing and a curse. It’s great to have so many abilities, but absorbing everyone’s feelings is extremely exhausting. It’s nice when others are feeling good, but when they don’t…let’s just say my life has many ups and downs ;)
